Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) in Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is famous for its classical Buddhist temples. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is the most popular one.

The temple was built in 778 and reconstructed in 1633. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure.

This temple worships Kannon (观音), a deity of great mercy and compassion.

The main hall was built on a steep cliff, supported by 18 pillars made from over 400-year-old zelkova trees.

The expression "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu" is the Japanese equivalent of the "to take the plunge”.
