An earthquake in 1989 damaged a section of the eastern span of the Bay Bridge.
So a new eastern span was built, and the old one was dismantled.
You can see the dismantling is almost done and some remains are left.
The new span could withstand the largest earthquake expected over a 1500-year period.
The eastern span connects Oakland to Yerba Buena Island, which we're walking towards.
Behind you is Port of Oakland.

You can see there is only one tower for the eastern span.
-
And the lights on the bridge are turned up!

Thanks for coming.
