Hakone is one of the oldest Japanese-style residential garden in the West.
In 1915, two San Francisco arts patrons, Oliver and Isabel Stine bought this land.
They modeled the gardens upon Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
The City of Saratoga bought the garden in 1966.
Hakone was a filming location for the movie Memoirs of a Geisha.
